1. How can my children get involved?
First, your child's school will have to be selected by the local school board to participate in this program . In the past, we have taken the information to the school board first for their approval. They then decide which schools within their jurisdiction they want to participate in the program. Now, with our website, schools can contact us directly; however, they will still need to receive approval from their school board before we proceed. After the school board approves the trip, your child must meet all the requirements set forth in the Our Award section and generally be between the ages of 8 and 10.
  2. How can my school get involved
Your school can get involved with Montgomery KOSS through your school board. We pass our program through the school board for approval before taking students on trips. After the program has been approved, we have the school board select which school would benefit the most from our program.

First, determine if your school board has heard of our program. If they have not, tell them about it and give them our name, address, phone number and website.

Currently we are only able to serve schools in the southern King County and perhaps northern Pierce County area of Washington. In the past we have only served schools in Western Washington and Northern Oregon; but our hope is to expand the program wherever we can, depending on financial support.
  3. Can parents ride too?
There are two ways that the parents can ride along. 1) If they have volunteered to be one of the chaperones then they could ride for free. For every 28 children, we ask for 6 chaperones. 2) If a parent is not selected as a chaperone, he or she can purchase their own ticket for the same day and times. Please note that some train cars only hold 36 people (28 children, 6 chaperones, and sometimes Eugene and Myla Montgomery). If the car is full, it may be necessary for a non-chaperone parent to sit in a different part of the train. We prefer to keep all of the awardees in one car.
  4. If I make a donation, what will it be used for specifically?
When donations are received, it goes directly into our account that funds the rides. This money is used to purchase Amtrak tickets, trophies for each child, t-shirts for each child and books. A very small portion of donation money also goes to some necessary administrative expenses (such as making copies, etc).
  5. How do I know that my donation is helping?
You will know that your donation is helping by checking out our website. You will see that you have helped encourage several kids to become good citizens, in the hopes that they will be able to join the train ride.
